Track and Field: Cajuns Head North To Compete In A-State Scarlet And Black

Comments

LAFAYETTE Coming off a solid performance last week in its first of two scoring meets of the season, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team will head north to Jonesboro, Ark., to compete in the A-State Scarlet and Black Invitational at the Arkansas State Convocation Center.

The non-scoring meet gets underway at 10 a.m. with competition in the field events while the running events are scheduled to begin at 11.

Competing last week at the Texas A&M 13-Team Invitational, Louisiana claimed four first-place finishes and finished second in the men's event and seventh in the women's competition. Devin Davis (long jump), Kenneth Nassar (shot put), Ricky Theyard (triple jump) and newcomer Hanoj Carter (60-meters) each claimed first-place honors for the Ragin' Cajuns with Jana Jones earning a pair of top-5 finishes on the women's side with Kelci Lyons (800-meters), Alexandra Harrell (high jump) and Meredith Driskell (pole vault) all earning fourth-place finishes.

"This is going to be a different meet for us," head coach Lon Badeaux said of Saturday's meet. "We are resting most of our jumpers and throwers and are opening up most of our distance runners and the rest of the new faces. It should be exciting to see who steps up from this group against some (Sun Belt) conference opponents."

Danielle Castaldi and Lyons have posted the top two times in the 800-meter run among Sun Belt Conference runners this season with Matthew Rice posting the Sun Belt's best time in the 1-mile run while ranking fourth in the 800-meters.

Morgan Cormier and freshman Tyler Hughes are ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the men's 60-meter hurdles with Dionte Heath and William LeBlanc ranked second and third overall in the high jump. Lindsay Harmon, Harrell and Madalyn Trisler are ranked among the Sun Belt leaders in the women's high jump with Kaitlyn Moreau, Jasmin Fusilier and Joya Tardieff ranked among the leaders in the 60-meter hurdles.

Six newcomers will make their indoor debut for the Ragin' Cajuns with D'Sharee Collins and Alena Hrusoci competing on the women's side with Kody Breaux, Logan LaGarde, Austin Ley and Arthur Price competing for the men. They join a list of first-year athletes during the indoor season that includes Caitlin Domingues, Dajah Guidry, Bismarck Ebiweh, Desmond Holmes and Bryce Robinson.
