Track and Field: Three Cajuns Earn All-SBC Honors After First Day Of SBC Indoor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Alexandra Harrell produced a second-place performance in the women's high jump while Devin Davis and Nicholas Laurent each earned third-place finishes in their respective events to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team during the opening day of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The final day of action begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with competition in the women's pentathlon, followed by the final three events in the men's heptathlon. Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the finals of the men's triple jump and shot put with running events scheduled for noon with the finals of the women's 60-meter dash.

Louisiana finished the first day in sixth place on the women's side with 20.5 points. Arkansas State (28.5), Texas State (23.5), Georgia State (22.5), Appalachian State (22) and UT Arlington (21) were ahead of the Ragin' Cajuns.

In the men's event, Louisiana was seventh after the first day with 13 points with Texas State (45), South Alabama (31) and defending champion UT Arlington (30.5) leading the field.

Harrell was one of two Cajuns to score in the high jump after she cleared the bar at 5-7 . Madalyn Trisler placed fourth overall for Louisiana with a mark of 5-5 . The Ragin' Cajuns earned a second-place finish in the women's distance medley after crossing the finish line in 11:52.47.

Davis earned all-conference honors for the second straight year in the indoor long jump after finishing third overall with a mark of 24-11 . In the men's pole vault, Laurent cleared the bar at 15-10 to place third overall while the men's distance medley relay team earned one point after finishing eighth overall in 10:29.89.

In the first day of the men's heptathlon, Christian Umphries was in sixth place after scoring 2,634 points. Umphries, a Delcambre native, will conclude the heptathlon on Tuesday with action in the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.

Several members of the Ragin' Cajuns advanced to the finals in their respective events after qualifying through preliminaries.

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, freshman Tyler Hughes (2nd, 8.20) and Morgan Cormier (8th, 8.47) each advanced to the finals with Hanoj Carter reaching the finals in both the 60-meters (3rd, 6.75) and 200-meter dash (4th, 21.59). In the men's 800-meters, Matthew Rice reached the finals after qualifying eighth overall in 1:54.75.

Kelci Lyons advanced to the finals of the women's 800-meters after posting a time of 2:13.49 in the preliminaries. In the 60-meter hurdles, Kaitlyn Moreau (6th, 8.75) and Jasmin Fusilier (8th, 8.81) each qualified to the finals.
