Cross Country: Devitt, Robinson Helps Cajuns Sweep At Ragin' Cajuns Invitational

Comments

LAFAYETTE Anna Devitt, competing in the final home meet of her career, and Beau Robinson each claimed individual crowns and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns cross country team claimed the first five spots in each race to claim the team title at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Friday at Acadiana Park.

Louisiana recorded 15 points in the women's 5-kilometer race, which featured runners from four schools. Nicholls State (58) finished second in the race with Northwestern State and New Orleans each sending a partial team.

In the men's five-mile race, the Ragin' Cajuns earned the top seven spots to score 15 points with New Orleans (65), Northwestern State (94) and Nicholls State (134) rounding out the field.

"Today was very successful, I thought the men's team made some really good strides," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "Matt Rice and Cole Stafford are starting to return to form.

"The women's results were a little more jumbled. A couple of our girls were under the weather, so our times suffered a bit. But being such a deep team, they were able to overcome that."

Devitt, who claimed the individual title at last year's event, covered the 5K course in 18:00.1 to capture her first title of the season. Courtney Musgrove (18:34.8) finished second for the Ragin' Cajuns with Claire Hodges (18:39.6) finishing third, Danielle Castaldi (19:02.1) fourth and Hailey Hesterman (19:10.8) fifth.

Kaylei Esfeller (19:12.0) was sixth for Louisiana with Kelci Lyons (19:36.7) finishing seventh, Lindsay LaGarde (20:03.0) ninth and Courtney Broussard (21:45.5) 10th.

Beau Robinson cruised to his first individual title after covering the 5-mile course in 25:13.0. Twin brother Bryce Robinson was second for Louisiana after crossing the finish line in 25:45.0 with Matt Rice (26:19.7) placing third, Jacob Chicola (26:20.6) fourth and Cole Stafford (26:23.6) fifth.

Corbett Ourso earned a sixth-place finish for the Ragin' Cajuns after posting a time of 26:45.0 with Trey Bonin (26:53.9) finishing seventh, Sean Bezdek (27:02.6) ninth, Dylan Heck (27:13.4) 11th, Christian Bergeron (27:33.9) 12th and freshman Reagan LeMaire (28:45.3) 16th.

" I was very pleased on both the men's and women's sides," assistant coach Kelly LaMaison said. "AK (Anna Devitt) had a phenomenal day running her last home meet for us and taking the win with a strong finish. Beau Robinson showed consistency in leading our men's team with Bryce (Robinson) closing the gap very well with a second-place finish.

"The most pleasant surprise was having Matt Rice and Cole Stafford back in the mix. We wanted them to go out a little conservative and have them push in the middle of the race and they did."

Louisiana will resume action on Nov. 1 when it competes in the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Championships in Atlanta, Ga. The meet will take place at Nash Farm Battlefield with the women's 5K race schedule for 9 a.m. CST with the men's 8K race set for 10 a.m. CST.
