Track and Field: Cajuns Head To Texas To Compete In Aggie 13-Team Invitational

Comments

LAFAYETTE After an opening weekend that featured three first-place performances, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team will travel to College Station, Texas to compete in the Aggie 13-Team Invitational on Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.

Action in the scoring meet will begin at 12 p.m. with preliminaries in the women's 60-meter hurdles along with competition in the men's high jump, women's pole vault and men's and women's long jump. Live results will be available on RaginCajuns.com and the meet will be streamed live on SEC Network+ beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Louisiana will be joined by Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese State, North Texas, Northwestern State, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Pan American, Texas Southern and ULM.

"It's going to be a different aspect (a scoring meet) in that you don't have many scoring meets until the (Sun Belt) conference championships," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "It'll give us a little bit of a facet on how we compare to other teams. We're looking to build on last week where we're competing most of the same people with a few more newcomers."

The Ragin' Cajuns opened their season at the LSU Invitational with Devin Davis (long jump), Dionte Heath (high jump) and Meredith Driskell (pole vault) claiming first-place honors.

Davis, the All-Sun Belt Conference performer during the 2014 indoor season, cleared 24 feet, 3 inches to post the second-best mark in the Sun Belt Conference and the fifth-best nationally through the opening week. The individual title was his seventh overall and his fourth during indoor competition.

Heath, ranked No. 19 nationally, claimed the high jump title after crossing the bar at 6-9 while Driskell claimed the pole vault crown with a mark of 12-2.

Matthew Rice posted the third-fastest time among Sun Belt Conference runners and 34th nationally in the men's 800-meter run after posting a time of 1:56.20. Morgan Cormier and Ricky Theyard combined for three second-place finishes for Louisiana with Cormier competing in the 60-meter hurdles (8.22) and the 4x400-meter relay team (3:23.26), and Theyard posting a 48-11 mark in the triple jump to rank 20th nationally.

Junior Danielle Castaldi posted the fastest time among Sun Belt Conference runners and the 11th-fastest time nationally in the women's 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in 2:13.94. Tia Mitchell added a second-place finish in the women's long jump (18-2 ) with Lindsey Harmon placing third in the high jump (5-6).

Kelci Lyons, a Tulane transfer who made her indoor debut last week, finished second behind Castaldi in the 800-meters at the LSU Invitational and ranks No. 24 nationally. Two-time JUCO All-American Raven Cameron will make her debut for Louisiana in the weight throw and will be joined by JUCO teammate DaNay Rowland who will compete in the shot put.

Twin brothers Beau and Bryce Robinson along with sprinter Hanoj Carter will highlight a group of newcomers for the Ragin' Cajuns making their indoor debut on the men's side. Both Robinsons, along with Rice and Louisiana Tech transfer Jacolby Cooper, will compete in the distance medley relay. Carter, a Northwestern State transfer and 2013 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, will compete in the 60-meter dash.

"We're going to have some new kids compete this week," Badeaux said. "Hanoj is one of the best sprinters in the region, but he's been off for a year so we want to see where he's at. Our young distance runners will get a chance to compete this week and we'll get a chance to see where they will help us on the track."
