Track and Field: Cajuns Turn In Solid Effort At Aggie 13-Team Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Devin Davis, Ricky Theyard, Kenneth Nassar and newcomer Hanoj Carter each turned in first-place performances as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns indoor track and field team earned a second-place finish on the men's side at the Aggie 13-Team Invitational on Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.

On the women's side, Jana Jones recorded a pair of top-5 performances while Alexandra Harrell (high jump) and Meredith Driskell (pole vault) each finished fourth in their respective events to lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a seventh-place finish in the meet hosted by Texas A&M.

Dionte Heath (high jump) earned a second-place finish for Louisiana with Matthew Rice (1-mile run) placing third on the men's side as the Ragin' Cajuns scored 79 points to finish ahead of North Texas (76.0), Texas A&M-Kingsville (65.0) and ULM (47.0). Sam Houston State claimed both the men's (107.50) and women's titles (121.50) with North Texas finishing second in the women's event.

"We don't know how much those numbers really mean because it's early in the season, but we showed some really good things today," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "I thought we were better than last week. Overall, it was a more solid effort and I felt we really built on last week, and that's what we're looking for getting better each time out."

Davis earned his second individual title in the long jump this season after finishing at with a meet-record jump of 24 feet, 7 inches. Theyard, who finished second in the triple jump at last week's LSU Invitational, recorded a jump of 48-5 on his first of six attempts and held off ULM's Jemal Parharm (47-9 ) for the individual title.

Carter, making his Ragin' Cajuns debut after transferring from Northwestern State, posted the top time in the 60-meter dash (6.90) during the preliminaries before recording a winning time of 6.92 in the finals. Rice, competing in the 1-mile run, shattered his previous best in the event by over 15 seconds after crossing the finish line in 4:15.45.

Freshman Tyler Hughes earned a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.26) with Morgan Cormier finishing seventh (8.53) for Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns distance medley relay team that featured Rice, Jacolby Cooper and twin brothers Beau Robinson and Bryce Robinson, finished fifth overall with a time of 10:40.27.

Nassar, who set a meet record in last year's event, took the early lead in the shot put after recording a throw of 52-6 on his first attempt before setting a meet record on his final attempt at 54-8 . In the high jump, Heath turned in his second consecutive second-place performance after clearing the bar at 6-8 with William LeBlanc finishing fifth in the event at 6-6 .

Freshman Richard Delphin earned a fourth-place finish for the Ragin' Cajuns in the weight throw after posting a mark of 52-10 with Landon Carroll placing sixth at 50-11 .

Jones finished fourth for the Ragin' Cajuns in the women's shot put (44-10 ) before earning a fifth-place finish in the weight throw (54-6 ), shattering her personal-best by nearly a foot. In the pole vault, Driskell led the Ragin' Cajuns after clearing the bar at 11-11 with twin sisters Emily Gale and Amanda Gale finishing fifth overall at 11-7 .

In the women's high jump, Harrell cleared the bar at 5-5 to place fourth overall for Louisiana with Madalyn Trisler finishing in fifth at 5-3 . Kaitlyn Moreau (60-meter hurdles) finished fifth overall in 8.91, Kelci Lyons (800-meters) was fourth at 2:14.56, Danielle Castaldi (800-meters) seventh at 2:17.76, and the women's 4x400-meter relay team earned a sixth-place performance in 3:56.93.

Louisiana will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 24) when it travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to compete in the A-State Scarlet and Black Invitational at the Arkansas State Convocation Center.
