Track and Field: Victor Tabbed As Sun Belt Male Field Athlete Of The Week

Comments

NEW ORLEANS After posting a school-record and claiming his first individual title in the weight throw, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track standout Justin Victor was named Wednesday as the Sun Belt Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week in a release by the league office.

Victor, from DeRidder, helped lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a third-place finish in the season-opening Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational in College Station, Texas.

"Justin really has done a great job in the offseason getting ready for this year," said head coach Lon Badeaux, "and his early results show. We are excited for him to win Athlete of the Week from the Sun Belt Conference and we're looking for him to have a great season."

The senior claimed the individual title in the weight throw with a mark of 63 feet, 9.5 inches the top throw in the league and the 21st-best in the NCAA this season. Victor's record throw eclipsed the previous mark (63') that was set in the same venue by Garrett Harkless at the 2011 Texas A&M Conference Challenge on Jan. 15, 2011.

Arkansas State's Sharika Nevlis (women's track athlete) and WKU's Jessica Ramsey (women's field athlete) were repeat winners for this week's Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track & Field Women's Athletes of the Week.

Nelvis claimed the title in the 60-meters at the Kentucky Invitational with a time of 8.15 seconds, the second fastest time in the NCAA this season. The Memphis, Tenn. native finished seventh in the 200-meters with a time of 24.29, as she owns the top times in the league in both events.

Ramsey continues to put up the best shot put and weight throw marks in the SBC and it was no different at the Kentucky Invitational as the senior put up a shot put mark of 51'9" inches (15.77) and weight throw toss of 59'7" inches (18.16m). Ramsey's throws earned her runner-up honors in the shot put and fifth-place in the weight throw at the meet.

Ramsey's teammate, Elvyonn Bailey, was named this week's male track athlete of the week after his performances in Lexington. Bailey turned in the league's fastest 400-meter dash time by nearly a full second blazing his way to a time of 47.08 seconds for runner-up honors at the meet. Bailey's time was the second-fastest in program history, trailing only his school record of 46.70 he set on the way to his individual title at the 2013 SBC Indoor Championships.

Bailey clocked a personal record 6.81 second time in the 60-meter dash the previous weekend and currently owns the Sun Belt's top times in the 400 and 60-meter dashes.

Louisiana will return to action on Friday (Jan. 25) when it travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to compete in the A-State Invitational. The Ragin Cajuns will be joined in the non-scoring meet by host Arkansas State, Ole Miss, South Alabama, UALR, and McNeese State.
