Track and Field: Gonzales Named To Capital One Academic All-America Team

Comments

LAFAYETTE Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field decathlete Wes Gonzales was one of 45 student-athletes named on Thursday to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Gonzales, a senior marketing major, was named to the second-team and became the University's 21st student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors dating back to 1980. One of 11 student-athletes on the 45-man squad with a cumulative 4.0 grade point average, Gonzales became the first track and field athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since former Ragin' Cajun Greg Daigle was named as a first-team selection in 1992.

"This is a phenomenal award for Wes," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "He has had a great athletic career, but to think about what kind of time and effort it takes to succeed as a decathlete. And to still put that equal time and effort to excel in the class room is remarkable. I'm very proud of his accomplishments for our university and for him in receiving this award."

Gonzales ranked among the Sun Belt Conference leaders in the decathlon during the recently completed 2014 outdoor season, scoring a school-record 7,033 points at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational and earning third-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors.

Gonzales set personal-bests in 10 events during the outdoor season and added personal-bests in four events during indoor competition.
