Cross Country: Ragin' Cajuns Prepare For Sun Belt Championships

Comments

LAFAYETTE The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns cross country team looks to secure its first conference championship since 2004 when it competes on Saturday at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships on the Troy University Dothan Campus in Dothan, Ala.

The women's 5K race begins at 10 a.m., with the men's 8K race set to start at 11. Live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com.

Louisiana, ranked No. 12 in the latest USTFCCCA Men's South Central Region Poll, claimed its lone conference title in 2004 and finished fourth at last year's event in Atlanta, Ga. The Ragin' Cajuns women's team looks to rebound from a 10th-place performance at last year's event after finishing fourth two years ago in Mobile, Ala.

"It has been a banner year for the men's cross country team," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "We have two guys (Stanley Limoh and Beau Robinson) that are way up there and should be in the top 5. We're going to be competitive the meet is going to be won on (positions) three through five. We'll need our three through five to step up and I feel we have the guys who can do that."

Beau Robinson earned first-team All-SBC honors last season after he finished second overall for the Ragin' Cajuns with a time of 25:30.2 with Matt Rice earning All-SBC honors after finishing 14th overall (26:20.0).

The addition of Limoh, who has three first-place finishes this season, has given Louisiana one of the top duos in the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin' Cajuns could be bolstered by a repeat performance by Bryce Robinson, who finished 16th overall for the Ragin' Cajuns at last year's event (26:26.9). Cole Stafford, Jacob Chicola and Christian Bergeron all finished in the top 50 for the Ragin' Cajuns at last year's event.

Courtney Musgrove is the top runner for a short-handed Ragin' Cajuns women's team that was battled injuries for most of the season. The senior claimed the individual title in her last meet at the Choctaw Open and will be joined in Saturday's event by Lindsay LaGarde, Hailey Hesterman, Kaylei Esfeller, Courtney Broussard and freshman Alexa Breaux.

"It was kind of the fear from the beginning, they've actually performed solidly all year," Badeaux said. "Starting with seven (runners) and losing your No. 2 runner (Claire Hodges) right off the bat, that's going to hurt us from being a top five. We have a couple of others banged up. It's been one of those weird years where you get beat up a little bit, but I still think we're solid enough to be very competitive."
