Track and Field: Cajuns Earn Second-Place Finish At South Alabama Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. Kelci Lyons, Tia Mitchell, Madalyn Trisler and Jasmin Fusilier each earned first-place finishes on the women's side with William LeBlanc, Devin Davis, Ricky Theyard and Bartul Basic claiming first-place honors on the men's side to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team at the South Alabama Invitational that concluded on Saturday at Micky Miller Blackwell Stadium.

The Ragin' Cajuns, competing for the first time since the Louisiana Classics last month, finished second overall in the team standings with the women's team finishing behind Troy while the men's team finished behind host South Alabama. In the women's event, Troy (172) and Louisiana (162) were followed by South Alabama (144), Tulane (114), Jackson State (43) and Arkansas State (16) in the six-team field. USA (227) and Louisiana (155) were 1-2 in the men's event and were followed by Jackson State (110), Tulane (71.5), Troy (42) and Arkansas State (31.5).

"The meet was a mixed bag of results," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "On one hand, you had some outstanding performances, specifically the men's javelin, triple jump, long jump, the women's 800-meters and the heptathlon. On the other hand, we looked a bit rusty coming off spring break.

"I expect that we will start to see complete team performances in the next couple of weeks leading into the (Sun Belt) conference championships."

Lyons set a personal-record and captured the women's 800-meter title after crossing the finish line in 2 minutes, 10:34 seconds, edging Tulane's Michelle Kreutzenberg (2:10.46) with teammate Danielle Castaldi finishing third (2:16.36).

Mitchell claimed the women's long jump title for Louisiana with a mark of 19 feet, 2 inches with Trisler claiming the high jump title (5-6 ), and Fusilier claiming the heptathlon (4,867 points). The Ragin' Cajuns added a pair of first-place finishes from its relays teams as the 4x100-meter relay team clocked a time of 46.71 and the 4x400-meter squad crossed the line in a winning time of 3:50.76.

Stacy Imagbe (12.31) and Caitlin Domingues (12.47) finished second and third overall in the women's 100-meter dash, Kayla Thompson was third in the 400-meter dash (57.63), Claire Hodges earned a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:51.38) and Alexandra Harrell finished sixth overall in the heptathlon (3,717).

Freshman Alena Hrusoci placed second overall in the 100-meter hurdles (14.64), while Joya Tardieff earned a pair of top-5 finishes for the Ragin' Cajuns finishing third overall in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.84) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.05).

In field events, Taylor Walker claimed second-place in the triple jump (38-4), Jana Jones (47-1 ) and Tamela Young (45-9 ) were third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put with Jones adding a third-place finish in the hammer throw (159-7).

The Ragin' Cajuns had three athletes finish in the top five in the women's javelin, with Amber Sharp (136-6) finishing third, Chelcie Sonnier (136-1) fourth and Addie Shafer (135-3) fifth.

LeBlanc recorded one of Louisiana's four first-place finishes on the men's side after claiming the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 7 inches and ahead of teammate Dionte Heath (6-5). Davis claimed the long jump title (24-5 ) for the Ragin' Cajuns with Theyard claiming the triple jump (49-11 ) and placing third in the long jump (22-10).

Basic, a freshman, helped Louisiana to a 1-2 finish in the javelin after recording a throw of 204-8 and edging teammate Cody Nickel (203-2). In the shot put, Kenneth Nassar finished second (49-2 ) and Justin Victor earned a second-place finish in the hammer throw (217-11).

The Ragin' Cajuns added a second-place finish from Jacob Chicola in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:52.26) and was followed by teammate Beau Robinson (9:53.18). Louisiana added a pair of second-place finishes from its relay teams as the 4x100 finished in 40.97 with the 4x400-meter team finishing in 3:22.56.

Tyler Hughes (15.29) and Morgan Cormier (15.32) were third and fourth, respectively in the 110-meter hurdles while Austin Ley was third in the 400-meter hurdles (55.14). Omari Davis (11.17) and Bismarck Ebiweh (11.18) were third and fourth in the 100-meter dash with Logan LaGarde (1:58.50) finishing fourth in the 800-meters.

Louisiana will return to action with a pair of meets beginning on Friday. The Ragin' Cajuns will travel to Hammond on Friday, sending selected athletes to compete in the Southeastern Lion Invitational before competing on Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge.
