Track and Field: Ragin' Cajuns Head East To Compete In LSU Alumni Gold

LAFAYETTE The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team will return to action on Saturday when it heads east to Baton Rouge to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The meet begins at 8:30 a.m. with competition in the men's and women's javelin, with running events in the early session starting at 9:45 a.m. The evening session begins at 1:20 p.m. with competition in the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay with the men's 4x400-meter relay wrapping up the meet at 4:05 p.m.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action after a second-place showing in both the men's and women's events last week at the South Alabama Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. Louisiana was scheduled to compete on Friday in the Southeastern Invitational in Hammond, but the meet was canceled due to impending weather and the fourth-annual meet will not be rescheduled.

Kelci Lyons (800-meters), Tia Mitchell (long jump), Madalyn Trisler (high jump) and Jasmin Fusilier (heptathlon) each earned first-place finishes in the women's events with William LeBlanc (high jump), Devin Davis (long jump) and Ricky Theyard (triple jump) recorded three of the Ragin' Cajuns four first-place finishes for the men.

Lyons posted the fastest time in the 800 meters among Sun Belt Conference runners last week at the USA Invitational where she crossed the finish line in 2:10.34. Trisler, ranked fifth among SBC athletes in the high jump, cleared the bar at 5-6 while Mitchell posted a mark of 19-2 in the long jump and enters the meet ranked No. 2 in the league.

Fusilier, who is scheduled to compete in the triple jump, posted the league's top score in the heptathlon last week and is ranked in the top-10 among SBC athletes in both the long jump (sixth) and 100-meter hurdles (eighth).

Also scheduled to compete for the Ragin' Cajuns is a group highlighted by Stacy Imagbe, ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference in the long jump, Alena Hrusoci, ranked No. 2 in the 400-meter hurdles, Meredith Driskell, who is third overall in the SBC in the pole vault, and Alexandra Harrell, ranked third overall in the high jump.

LeBlanc posted the best mark (6-11) in the high jump last month at the Texas Relays and is one of two Cajuns ranked in the top five in the event. Dionte Heath cleared a season-best 6-5 last week at the USA Invitational is ranked fifth among SBC athletes. In the long jump, Davis is ranked second overall, Justin Victor is second in the SBC in the hammer throw while Theyard is third in the league in the triple jump.

Louisiana's Morgan Cormier is ranked second in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles for the Ragin' Cajuns and Hanoj Carter is rated third in the league in the 100-meter dash. Trey Bonin enters the meet ranked No. 4 in the league in the 10,000-meter run with teammate Sean Bezdek rated sixth. Jeryl Brazil, ranked No. 6 in the 100-meter dash, will compete for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Junior Matt Rice will compete in the 1,500-meter run for Louisiana and is ranked fifth overall in the Sun Belt after posting a time of 3.52.79 at last month's Louisiana Classics. Jacob Chicola is ranked sixth overall in the Sun Belt Conference after posting a time of 9:52.26 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last week at the USA Invitational. Freshman Beau Robinson also turned in a top-10 finish in the steeplechase last week, as his time of 9:53.18 is ranked seventh in the league.
